facilitating compliance

Seminars for Lawyers

Ensuring lawyers are aware of competition legislation, of enforcement and of new trends and developments in competition law leads to informed businesses and a culture of compliance.

Jamaica

The Fair Trading Commission of Jamaica presented key provisions of their competition act at the Jamaican Bar Association seminar. Following that, lawyers were divided into small groups representing claimants and respondents, to present cases in a mock hearing of an abuse of dominance case. The staff of the Commission played the role of adjudicators and were available to guide lawyers in their understanding of the cases.

Turkey

The Turkish Competition Authority provides training seminars for lawyers given that competition law is relatively new in Turkey and that only two faculties offer courses on the subject. Training certificate programs for lawyers have been held with the co-operation of Istanbul Bar and Ankara Bar.

South Africa

The South Africa Competition Commission holds several strategic meetings and presentations with mostly historically disadvantaged
lawyers and non-competition law lawyers to educate them about the Act and the processes of the Commission at their disposal. It also hosts Legal Practitioner Breakfast Meetings mainly with competition lawyers for interaction, feedback, strengthening relations for support of the Commission’s work and creating greater awareness on Commission activities.
